BIO

Pottery is fun! I was first introduced to ceramics in 1994 at Stephen F Austin State University in Nacogdoches, TX. I needed two more classes to complete my Art minor before graduation, so I chose sculpture and ceramics. Like most of the undergrads in my class, we thought this will be an easy A and a GPA booster. That couldn’t have been any further from the truth. I studied under Piero Fenci who has been at SFA since 1975. Little did I know, I was learning from one of the best of the best in the ceramics world.  We made our own clay, learned hand building, attempted wheel throwing and attended guest artists workshops. One Saturday afternoon we were invited to join a Raku firing workshop hosted by Billy Ray Mangham. He was quite the character and I connected with his style right away. Not only did I enjoy being around him, I fell in love with the Raku process. I thought, how cool is this. You mean, you get to fire pieces until they glow bright orange, remove them from the kiln, place them in metal trash cans filled with combustable materials and catch them on fire?  Count me in! I have been hooked ever since.

I’m not a professional potter, I have built a career in the Interior Design industry while taking pottery classes on the side. I recently took that a step further and set up a small studio in the laundry room of our house. It’s a little hard to have a Raku kiln in the middle of the city, so I found a great facility at Brookhaven Community College. Not only do they have a great Raku kiln, they have an incredible staff and ceramics studio. The last few years have been a fun learning experience and confidence booster. While my pieces aren’t perfect, I have been able to perfect my firing technique as best I can. Raku firings are notorious for destroying your work due to the extreme temperature fluctuation. So much time goes into making your art, glazing your work and firing your work. When a piece doesn’t survive the firing, it is very disappointing.  When a firing is successful, there are no words to describe the feeling I get.
